TRANSDERMAL MAGNESIUM

‘Transdermal magnesium’ means that magnesium ions are absorbed via the epidermis – the outside layer of the skin. Just as we can sweat out electrolytes, the skin is also capable of absorbing electrolytes in via the same channels.  It is a very large membrane – and a self-regulating one at that.  When we swim in the sea we can absorb electrolyte minerals from the salt water.   Transdermal absorption of minerals has been practiced for thousands of years in a process called ‘Balneotherapy’ (salt water bathing in mineral springs) to relieve arthritis and tight muscles.  Magnesium uptake was tested extensively in balneotherapy studies by Russian scientists and others over the last century which demonstrate superior absorption of magnesium via the skin.

THE PROBLEM WITH ORAL MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS

Tablets

Tablets and powders are difficult to digest because they contain fillers and binding agents which can obstruct the absorption of some of the magnesium.  In addition, they are magnesium compounds which must first be digested using stomach acid.  The body then needs to re-assemble that magnesium ion with chloride ions so that it is able to be absorbed by cells.  This process takes several hours via the digestive system, whereas transdermal absorption is much faster and more direct. If you need to relax that muscle cramp quickly then massage in magnesium chloride.

The skin is the largest organ with the highest surface area and can thus come into contact with more magnesium than the digestive tract.  The bowel lining is also more fragile and sensitive.  It can only cope with a mild dilution of magnesium such as with mineral drinking water or the magnesium content of foods.  Any more than that just shoots out the back end into the toilet.  If you lose magnesium too quickly via liquid stools then the magnesium is not getting through the gut wall into the body’s inner tissue cells (ie. organs, muscle and bone).

Digestion is also inhibited by stress. We are not supposed to be digesting whilst in the midst of a ‘fight or flight’ situation – that is in the sympathetic mode.  Magnesium helps to relieve symptoms of stress so we can return to the relaxed parasympathetic mode – the grazing mode.   This can lead to a downward spiral as the more stress you experience the more magnesium you lose and the more magnesium you lose the more stress symptoms appear, further hindering digestion.  It can get pretty hard to pull apart those magnesium tablets the more you need magnesium.

Transdermal absorption using magnesium chloride is so much better and more effective because once magnesium chloride is dissolved it is in the right form for cellular uptake without further digestion.   Skin cells are able to quickly take up magnesium from bathing or from applying to skin using Magnesium Cream and Magnesium Oil.  Just serve it up to your skin and let your body do the rest with passive uptake just in the right amounts.  It is wonderfully relaxing and reviving.

WHY DO WE NEED MAGNESIUM?

Magnesium isRainforest tree - chlorophyll magnesium the ‘Master Mineral’ with the most functions, as it controls the electrolyte balance of cells.  Magnesium is the centre of the chlorophyll molecule in plants, which the plant uses to convert sunlight energy into starches and sugars.  Energy is always being transferred and magnesium always seems to be used in this exchange – whether in plants or in animals.  That’s why eating your ‘greens’ is so important for good health.

In animals magnesium is vital fMagnesium-ATPor electrolyte balance and for production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by mitochondria, which is the energy currency of the cell used to support enzyme activity. Magnesium has to be sufficient for potassium to function properly and vice versa.  Magnesium also controls how calcium is used in the body.  This means that when magnesium is low, calcium leaches out of the bones and settles in the soft tissue and joints and in the blood as free calcium – clogging up the works and causing hypertension and hypercalcaemia!

You need sufficient magnesium to use the iron in your haemoglobin.  People can have symptoms of anemia even when blood tests show iron to be in the normal range – simply because magnesium is deficient.

Magnesium is the trunk of the nutritional tree that supports and enhances enzyme activity and the work of other nutrients.  Magnesium regulates our nervous and electrical system, metabolism, endocrine system and immune system.  Auto-immune disorders are also associated with low magnesium.  Many things can go wrong when magnesium levels get too low.

Low magnesium and inflammationarthritis-kneeOur electrical system uses magnesium to ignite metabolism and support all cellular enzymatic functions, including repair of DNA links, insulin and blood sugar regulation, production of collagen in connective tissue, bone mineralisation, muscle recovery, protein synthesis, immune regulation, digestion and detoxification. Without magnesium metabolism becomes slow and sluggish.

Researchers have found that chronic magnesium deficiency over time leads to premature ageing and illness including hypercalcaemia, inflammatory diseases, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, arrhythmia, mental illness and even cancer.  Dehydration, restless legs and cramps result. Pain and cardiovascular pressure increases.  Adequate magnesium reserves are absolutely essential for optimum health and wellbeing, yet we lose it excessively under stress.

When magnesium levels get critically low it can lead to cardiac arrest because there are more magnesium receptors in the left ventricle of the heart than any other muscle in the body.  If the heart muscle cramps you are in big trouble.  If a paramedic can get to you early enough with an injection of magnesium chloride directly into the blood stream this could restore the heart rhythm and save your life – even without damage to the heart muscle.  Magnesium is vitally important for heart function and rhythm.

THE EASIEST FORM TO ABSORB IS NATURAL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

Magnesium chloride has been found to be the most bio-available form of magnesium able to enter cells without any prior digestion because it is a salt and completely water soluble. Once it is hydrated it is already in the right form for cellular uptake. Skin cells are able to quickly take up magnesium from bathing or from applying to skin using Magnesium Cream and Magnesium Oil.  As the body is self-regulating, it absorbs into the epidermis the magnesium it can cope with and no more.  The nutrients sit in this skin reservoir until absorbed by the tiny capillaries of the dermis underneath.  Then of course you need to apply more magnesium!  It’s a daily routine.  Just like water, you can’t drink on Monday and nothing for the rest of the week.  Every day, every hour, every minute your cells are using up magnesium in metabolism.  Foods and soils are magnesium depleted, tablets too hard to digest – which leaves us with transdermal magnesium absorption of nature’s magnesium chloride to put back into our cellular magnesium bank account what is lost under stress.

Chloride also forms about 70% of the body’s total negative ion content and is used extensively by the body.  Magnesium chloride is thus a valuable macro mineral that the body is hungry for.  Cells use magnesium chloride more extensively than other forms of magnesium.  In other words, you get more bang for your buck!

HOW TO USE TRANSDERMAL MAGNESIUM

Magnesium bath relieves stressYou can use the transdermal magnesium method in the comfort of your own home. For a foot soak use a tablespoon of Elektra Magnesium Chloride Flakes in half a bucket of comfortably hot water and soak for half an hour (or you can have a bath with a cup of flakes).   Soaking also helps the body eliminate toxins and waste products via the skin, which lifts the load on the liver.

Make a tasty mineral alkaline drinking water for better hydration or a mouth wash with higher concentration of Elektra Magnesium Flakes – food grade.  Regular use of the mouthwash twice a day inhibits the build-up of calcium deposits and keeps gums in good condition.  Of course flossing is important to prevent the build up of food particles that attract acid-forming bacteria.

Magnesium mineral mouthwash is gentle and pleasant to use.  It is preferable to alcohol-containing mouthwashes because alcohol is known to break skin barrier protection, and therefore repeated use of alcohol solutions over time is not ideal for gum health support.  If gums are inflamed or have open wounds the alcohol of commercial mouthwashes can penetrate and enter the bloodstream.

When magnesium is low, free calcium deposits in the soft tissue and joints making everything feel stiff and less mobile.  Magnesium releases the grip of the calcium and moves it into bone tissue cells to strengthen the bones.  More magnesium helps musclesStress relief and muscle relaxation, ligaments and the smooth muscle walls of blood vessels to stay stretchy and flexible.  This improved elasticity is also important for a more youthful skin and cardiovascular system.  Magnesium is thus a great calcium-channel blocker and natural ‘de-calcing agent’.  It helps us stay young and juicy longer – instead of prematurely old, hard and crunchy.  They don’t call it the ‘anti-aging mineral’ for nothing!

Elektra Magnesium Oil:  Our high concentration magnesium water-based solution, ‘Magnesium Oil Spritz’ with pure essential aromatherapy oils, is also ideal for massaging into tight muscles or sore joints for relaxation and stimulation of blood flow to promote healing for more acute conditions.  Use it for muscle recovery and increasing flexibility.  We call it ‘WD40 for the body’ when you have stuck places to loosen up.

Six sprays delivers over 300mg magnesium.  Massage in as much as you need to achieve relaxation of tight muscles and joints.  This is a high strength transdermal magnesium product and is best used for adults and teenagers.  Very young children or people with sensitive skin and skin disorders should use magnesium flakes bathing and magnesium cream until skin condition improves enough to use magnesium oil.

magnesium cream skin care

REVOLUTIONARY Elektra Magnesium Moisturizing Cream features specially blended organic and wild-harvested rich plant oils and butters infused with magnesium chloride hexahydrate (15%).  This beautiful skin care cream not only keeps the skin well hydrated, soft and supple, but it is also an excellent delivery system for magnesium.

There are about 20 different ingredients in each magnesium cream all delivering rich nutrients.  The plant fats help absorb optimal levels of magnesium because skin needs a certain ratio of fats to salts for salts to absorb.  If the skin is too dry and you apply straight magnesium oil it tends to sit there too long and cause a sticky stingy irritation.

However Elektra Magnesium Cream formulas have overcome this issue, making it a gentle and effective way to apply transdermal magnesium.  It is a beautiful anti-aging cream – leaving the skin feeling soft, smooth, and with a healthy and youthful complexion. A dessertspoonful of Elektra Magnesium Cream delivers about 300mg of elemental magnesium, which is an average daily supplement if you are reasonably healthy.

You can use Elektra Magnesium Cream all over the body, face and even as an underarm deodorant. People with medium to oily skin may find the lighter Magnesium Creams of ‘Island Spice’ and ‘Zest-Citrus’ preferable, as they can help with refining pores, calming inflammation and alleviating acne. Herbal and Sensory Gold Magnesium Creams are best for people with normal to dry skin, sensitive skin, dermatitis or psoriasis and eczema type skin disorders, due to their fattier profiles, hydrating and conditioning effects.  Elektra Magnesium Cream enhances skin barrier protection.

300-400mg of magnesium is recommended to supplement the average shortfall from the food supply.  However some people under a lot of stress may need two or three times that amount to replenish magnesium stores.  Use all three methods of transdermal magnesium delivery in cases of high-end deficiency.  After some experimental trial and error you can work out your own individual needs and perfect daily routine.
